Welcome back to the 7 Secrets
Today I’m going to continue with the post series on 7 Secrets to Buying a car. In the first two posts we covered secrets number one through three, so today we can cover Secret #4 and #5, and then come back tomorrow to see #6 and #7.
So let’s get right to it.
Car Buying Secret # 4 — “The Eye Candy Seduction Syndrome”
At some dealerships there is a lot of ‘eye candy’ in their inventory. ‘Eye-Candy’ is all those beautiful cars that, in some cases, are out of your budget and price range. If you spend too much time looking at
these luxury items, you run the risk of making the car you would really enjoy seem inadequate.
Let’s say you spent a lot of time researching cars at places like bradyourcarguy.com (of course) to find the car that you not only want, but that perfectly fits your needs and fits nicely into your budget. Then, you go to the dealership showroom and suddenly all the glitz and glamor of the top of the line floor models catches your attention. Suddenly that car that your rational mind adored is the furthest thing from your mind. Now all you can think about is finding a way to pay for the top trim level luxury SUV. That’s ‘eye candy’ in action.
So, how do you combat it?
The first thing you need to do is slow down. Stop.
Remember all that research that went into your original decision of what car to buy. Take the time to reflect on it before you let yourself get swept up with the emotion that can be brought about by all those fancy cars.
One way to relax and remind yourself is to make a list of questions to ask the salesperson, or at least a list of talking points, about the car you intend to buy before visiting the dealership. This will help you remember what came for and help the salesperson to get a better idea of what kind of car you are looking for.
Believe it or not the salesperson will actually appreciate the input. The hardest part of a salesperson job is:
• Finding you the right car.
• The car that you really are going to like.
• A car that fits your needs as well as your budget.
• A car that you and your family can have a lot of fun with.
The only way a salesperson can accomplish this is ask intelligent questions concerning your car budget, wants and needs. Like any good Attorney, CPA, Financial Advisor or home builder, the questions your car professional asks you on the front end, will determine the direction they take in finding the perfect car you and your family. Your being prepared with questions of your own and specific qualities you are interested in will help you both to be relaxed and informed throughout the experience. And it will keep you from being tempted by the ‘eye candy’.
Well, that was a little longer than I expected, but secret #5 is fairly short so we’ll go ahead and cover it today, as well.
Car Buying Secret # 5 — Profitable Preparation
I mention this a lot but it really can’t be said enough. An informed consumer is a good consumer. The more information you have about what you want the happier ou will be with the purchase and the better the deal you will end up getting.
With that in mind, learn the 4 Step Car Buying Process.
This is the process as you should undertake it to get the most out of your purchase.
Step # 1. Gathering and Exchange of information — Research, research, research. If you are starting to think that I consider being well informed important, you are definitely getting the picture.
Step # 2. Using the information to select the right car — Remember the information alone will not save you. You have to implement what you know. You have found the kind of car, or at least the general type of vehicle, that fits your needs. Now find the specific car at the dealership and don’t get sidetracked.
Step # 3. Demo-Negotiate-Purchase — Walk around. Try things out. Sit in the car. Take a test drive. Kick the freaking tires if you think you need to. Do whatever you can to experience the car before you buy.
Then Get the price your research has told you you should be getting. Negotiate with the information you’ve spent time acquiring.
Now you can buy.
Step # 4. Have Fun-Fun-Fun. Enjoy your new purchase to the fullest.
The final goal of any car purchase is to maximize your investment by having more fun, intensify relaxation and reward yourself. Because you deserve it. So enjoy your new car and rest assured you got everything out of the experience that was available.
Tomorrow I’ll be back with Secrets #6 and #7. Until then, have a great day!
