Lincoln Navigator -Mobile Luxury-circa 2008

December 29, 2008 by Brad - Your Car Guy

Reduce Travel Fatigue

The Lincoln Navigator for years has been more than just a vehicle. It is, in fact, the original luxury SUV and, though others have imitated, even quite well at times, the Navigator is still one of the premier luxury vehicles on the market. Over the holidays I spent a little time driving around in a 2008 Elite model and, let me tell you, if you are in the market for a luxury SUV you owe to yourself to check out the Lincoln Navigator.

The Luxury of Soft and Smooth Leather

The 2008 Lincoln Navigator is nothing short of a mobile living room. And not just any living room. Not everyone’s living space has the comfort level or the entertainment components that one finds in a well equipped Navigator. The Navigator I drove was, in fact, equipped to the teeth, and when you combine the Sirius satellite radio, pumping through the 14 speaker THX II certified audio system, with the heated and cooled 10 way adjustable leather captain’s chair, and whatever scenic view you choose to drive to, you will likely wish your house were so pleasurable. Now just add plush leather seating for eight, a state of the art entertainment system, a power skylight and independent heating and cooling zones, and your living room might start to compare to the interior of this manor on wheels.

Listen….To the Quite Ride Even at Full Throttle

Another area where the Navigator blows away your standard living space is horsepower. Okay, so that might not be that hard to accomplish, but with a 5.4 L V8 turning out 300 horses and 365 lb/ft of torque this mobile home theater will get up and go when asked. What’s really surprising, though, is how quietly and smoothly this Navigator gets down the road. For a vehicle of its size, the ride quality is superb. And, when driving at lower speeds, it was difficult to tell if the motor was even running, aside from the tell tale forward movement, of course.

Big on Room and Tiny on Gas

I was somewhat surprised by the fuel economy. Although not a gas miser, I logged 18.2 mpg on a 320 mile road trip which is not too shabby. Sure when fuel prices are near $4.00 a gallon it isn’t going to be the cheapest car on the road, but then again, with the model I was driving selling for a little over $50,000.00, economy isn’t normally the principle concern of the average Navigator consumer.

Elegant Chrome Finish

The Navigator consumer is after comfort and style and the exterior of this Lincoln is stylish indeed. The navigator has traditional clean SUV lines, with wing-shaped tail lights that wrap around the sides of the large yet lean body. In the front, though the high intensity head lights have a classy jeweled look, the large intricate chrome grill is definitely the dominant feature. If you like bright shining chrome then this is the front end for you. Even Flavor Flav would be impressed with the bling of this grill.

EZ-Step Retractable Running Boards

One exterior feature that I thought was really cool were the power running boards. Though the Navigator is not difficult to step in and out of for most drivers, older drivers will definitely find the step a blessing. When retracted the step is all but hidden and, even when extended, it does not have the add-on look of many running boards. Instead, the step fits nicely in with the overall appearance of the vehicle.

All in all, this Navigator was a joy to drive and a car I would recommend to anyone in the market for an upscale luxury vehicle. In fact, I’m seriously considering moving into one and just leasing out my house. Well, maybe not, but it really wouldn’t be as ridiculous as it first sounds. If you find yourself in the market for a ride that will make you forget you’re traveling, then a Lincoln Navigator is definitely an option you should look into.
