Jeep Wrangler – A Summer Car that is a Bargain Buy in the Winter
December 28, 2008 by Brad - Your Car Guy
This is the time of year to buy a seasonal car or vehicle out of season. A seasonal car, such as a convertible, is associated mainly with the beach, the lake, sun and summer fun in a 4 season geographic area. In a lot of parts of the country we have had a pretty nasty start to winter. If you want a great deal and don’t mind buying your vehicle “out of season” go on line today and start searching.
When a car is out of season, the dealer is aware of it as well. A lot of times will take a lose on a vehicle to sell or “turn inventory” now instead of waiting six months in hope of getting a better deal.
For instance right now is a great time to buy the Jeep Wrangler.
Any die hard Jeep enthusiast will tell you that a Jeep Wrangler is one of the best off-road vehicles around. However, as with any off-road car or truck, their capabilities are always subject to friendly debate on websites and chat rooms.
The Jeep Wrangler didn’t get attention until 1997. That was the year Chrysler redesigned the vehicle, debuting the new TJ model.
This new design provided a smoother on-road ride, while providing more axle articulation for off-road ability. It also marked the return of round headlights.
The interior also received a major upgrade, including airbags and a friendly climate control system. 1997 was also the year demand soared for used Jeep Wranglers.
Used car buyers in the market for a four-wheel drive, off-road vehicle usually have their sights set on a Jeep Wrangler. The threat of roll over is highly unlikely (unless the car is driven unsafely), and its four-wheel drive capabilities give it a good bite in mud and on steep climbs. In our part of the country, Bartlesville, Oklahoma there are plenty of off-road, exciting trails.
The Jeep Wrangler’s handle in winter conditions may vary. While it can trudge through the snow without losing traction, the Wrangler has been known to slide sideways, or fishtail. This, however, is a common occurrence in any car. Besides it seems you see more Wranglers on the road in the Spring and Summer anyways.
The safety ratings on the Jeep Wrangler may vary. While the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it their second highest rating, Crashtest.com only gave it an “acceptable”. Cartalk.com gave it a grim review, saying the Jeep Wrangler has more deaths than the Toyota Rav4 or Subaru Forester.
So, what else are experts saying about the Jeep Wrangler?
Edmunds says that while the Wrangler has a stiff ride, it is perfect for anyone looking for a “cheap convertible or an off-roader that can go just about anywhere”.
Consumer Guide gave the Wrangler a thumbs up for cargo room and maneuverability. They say, “Wranglers really are more car like than before – far better in ride quality and ergonomics. The great strides made in safety, ride quality, and refinement makes the Wrangler closer to serving as an everyday vehicle”.
Other reviews from Motor Trend and Money include quotes like, “lowest priced 4×4 SUV”, “the ‘King’ of off-road ability”, and, “rated as one of the five best buys for a teenager’s car or truck”.
Generally speaking the Wrangler has been a success. However, it isn’t for everyone.
Gas mileage is not that terrific, getting an average of less than 20 mpg. Experts speculate that this is more due to aerodynamics than anything else. It’s also a little heavier than other small SUVs. In addition, the seating tends to be a bit cramped and the soft top tends to be a little noisy.
Despite its flaws, a used Jeep Wrangler is still a great buy for anyone looking to have some off-roading fun. They are fun, sporty and will keep you wanting more.
