What is Eco-Boost?

A couple of days ago I received an e-mail from a reader who had read a recent post I wrote on the 2010 Ford Taurus SHO. The reader noticed the use of the term Eco-boost when referring to the SHO’s V6 powerplant and was wondering what the term denoted. So, for those of you who may be wondering this as well, I though with today’s post I’d focus a little more on Ford’s Eco-boost.

If you are a Ford consumer, Eco-Boost is a term you will probably be hearing a lot in coming years. Aside from the Taurus SHO Ford vehicles like the F-150, Mustang, Ford Fusion, and Lincoln MKS will offer an Eco-Boost option in coming models. But what does Eco-Boost mean?

Eco-Boost: V8 Power, V6 Economy

As one Ford executive put it Eco-Boost is “a technology that delivers V8 power with V6 fuel economy”. More technically, Eco-Boost is a combination of twin turbos, direct fuel injection and a 6speed DCT, or dual clutch transmission. Because with direct fuel injection you can achieve higher compression ratios Ford is able to get a 10:1 compression ratio from a 3.5 liter V6, which when combined with water cooled twin turbos, generates the horsepower and torque of much larger engines without increasing the fuel economy.

While Eco-Boost doesn’t actually improve the fuel economy of the V6 from that of a standard V6, it does allow for Ford to use a V6 engine in applications that would typically require V8s and thereby offer all the power and performance the consumer would have had to have endured V8 fuel bills for from a more economical V6. The emissions are also substantially reduced, by around 15%, by replacing V8s with V6s. So, the environmental benefits come on both fuel consumption and a reduced carbon footprint.

When these technological improvements in the motor are then combined with other Ford fuel economy based improvements like lower vehicle weights, electric power steering, and more aerodynamic designs Ford is able to offer more environmentally friendly and cost efficient sustainable vehicles with all of the features that the customers actually want.

I remember the old single turbos and the lag they had. I had one of the V8 ford sho cars liked it alot so did alot of people who saw it. Since they are using twin turbos and water cooling with 10-1 compression low end lag should be very little. Interested in seeing how well they actualy do driving one.

With the new ecoboost technology, we can definitely expect to see it more in the future. Direct injection allows the engine to burn fuel more efficiently and the industry is all about going green.
