When Does a Safe Toyota Become Dangerous?
February 21, 2010 by Brad - Your Car Guy · Leave a Comment
Are You Paying Attention?…”Stay In Your Lane Meat-head!”
We all possess in town driving patterns that are predictable. There is a left hand turn that I take everyday, sometimes multiple times a day into my neighborhood that falls in this predictable category. It will help if I can help you visualize what I look at everyday as I approach this left-hand turn. Everyday it gets a little more scary. It is not a matter of if but when someone is going to be hurt and hurt bad.
I Bet You Witness What I Witness Everyday
I make this turn approximately 150 feet from a crest of a small hill, so the oncoming traffic has plenty of time to see me. I have sufficient time to see them coming as well, as their vehicle tops the crest and the road flattens out. The traffic moves at a constant clip of 45MPH, sometimes a little faster. However speed is not the problem here. Drifting left of center for eight out of ten cars is. Having made this same turn for the last twelve years the frequency of this drifting has gone from zero to close to 80%.
What has Changed Over the Last Twelve Years to Raise the Risk Level of the Left-hand Turn?
- It is not the vehicle. Cars, trucks, SUV’s are all manufactured safer today than they were in 1998.
- The road I use to make the left hand turn has been widened and improved, it is a safer thoroughfare.
- The weather is the same. Global warming has nothing to do with it.
So that leaves one variable. The driver. Everyday as I watch one car after another drift left of center headed directly for the center of my front grill, I flash my lights to wake them up. If I don’t it could be “curtains”,
The Definition of a Drifter up to 1998: Tramp_Wanderer_Vagabond_Hobo_Transient_Rolling Stone_Vagrant
Starting in around 2001 a new definition has emerged to define a “Drifter”, Automobile drivers that have a phone held up to their ear, sitting in their lap or in the palm of their hand. These drivers are paying more attention to their phone than they are to the road. As cars continue to improve in safety driving skills seem to diminish in the same proportion.
Today The # 1 Hazard to Your Overall Car Safety
The number one safety issue for any car, truck, SUV or van is the cell phone. Why stop at cars and trucks? Excuse me for being a dim-wit for not mentioning the following, How about passenger trains, freight trains, airplanes, boats or any piece of machinery that requires your undivided attention to operate.
What Causes More Accidents A Defect in the Car of the Driver?
As manufactures continually upgrade the performance and safety of vehicles they also give the driver a false sense of security. I came across an interesting point of view about car accidents, asking…..is it the driver or the car?, this is a short but poignant article by Jon Hamilton, click on this link.http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=123610366&sc=17&f=1001
When Doe
s A Safe Car Become Dangerous?
Recently Toyota had a recall on various different models concerning a possible “sticky peddle” that could cause a sudden and unsafe boost in acceleration. This defect has been confirmed in less than 20 cars worldwide. To maintain Toyota’s long tradition of building safe cars the manufacturer decided to recall every car made that in any way shape or form could be affected by this malfunction. A blanket recall regardless if any Toyota sold had the defect or not, Right now Toyota is upgrading 50,000 cars a day. That is how you keep a safe car, safe.
As a Toyota dealer my first duty is to serve our local customer needs first, and then any Toyota customer worldwide thereafter. If you have any questions or if can provide any help call me at 918-333-0900. I have and will always be proud to represent the Toyota Corporation.

Ford Gains as Good News Abounds
December 11, 2009 by Brad - Your Car Guy · 1 Comment
This morning I did a quick Google search on Ford Motor Company. The headlines are amazing:
- Ford Motor Company’s Quick Lane Fastest-Growing Service Brand in the Industry
- Ford Considers $500 Million Investment in Michigan for Production of Hybrids
- Ford Motor Company will off new Fiesta starting at $13,995
- Ford Fusion Gets Top Marks, Company Stock Soars
- Ford Fusion Named “Motor Trend” Magazine’s 2010 Car of the Year
- Ford Vehicle Among Best in Highest Retained value
- Ford Puts Four Vehicles in Strategic Vision 2009 Total Value Awards –Focus, Mustang, Expedition and Super Duty F-250 and F-350.
And that was just over the last few weeks. As a Ford dealer, I see it at the dealership every day. People who just a couple of years ago wouldn’t have considered a Ford or Lincoln-Mercury are taking a look and as they say “Driving One.”
Whether it’s the new found recognition by the press that Ford makes the best vehicles in America, or the awareness that Ford refused to take any government bailout money, the fact it Ford delivers for today’s consumers like never before.
Ford has become the leader with vehicles that embody compelling styling, design excellence, smart technology, safety, fuel economy, low emissions, quality, and more.
As Motor Trend Magazine said in their article announcing the Fusion’s ascension to 2010 Car of the Year, the new Fusion is “better, smarter, nicer, prettier, comfier, leaner, meaner and greener in every way.” Also in contention were the all-new Taurus and the perennial Mustang.
Top to bottom the Ford, Lincoln Mercury line up fits the bill and will only get better.
Over the next few weeks, were going to take a look at each vehicle in the 2010 lineup and take a glimpse at what’s to come.
Thanks for your interest! If I can ever be of assistance in any way please let me know.

5 Tips to Save Money on Used Cars, SUV’s and Trucks
August 12, 2009 by Brad - Your Car Guy · 3 Comments
This is Part One of a Two Part Report on How to Save Money Buying a Preowned or Used Vehicle: ____________________________________
Cash for Clunkers has left a Void in the Used Car Market
The rush to buy new cars since the government announced the C.A.R.S has slowed down the used car market. This slow down is to the point now that it is a good time to get a good deal on a used vehicle.
Look! Are You Currently in the Market for a Preowned Vehicle?
The slow down in the used car market has created a supply and demand scenario. Demand for used cars is down and supply is up. When this happens used car prices go down. This temporary supply issue will evaporate once the C.A.R.S program comes to an end. If you are in the market to purchase a used vehicle now is the time to take action.
Why You Should Buy Now: Within 90 Days the Tables will Turn on the Market
When the government money runs out for the C.A.R.S program the pendulum will start to swing. Right now the buying emphasis is on new cars, crossovers, trucks and SUV’s. For some dealers this could lead to a shortage of new cars and create a “run” on used cars.
This could lead to steady to higher prices for new vehicles and as the supply of used cars dwindles the price of a used vehicle will rise. When this transpires the current “buyers” market will shift to a “sellers” market. End result prices on new and used vehicles will start to creep up.
“Survey Says”
In a recent poll conducted by CCI they found that the number one consumer concern when buying a used vehicle is the future reliability and safety of the vehicle purchased. Consumers at all cost want to avoid getting stuck with a lemon. When buying a used vehicle you have heard of the term “Cherry”. Every preowned shopper is looking for a “Cherry”. These 5 tips will help you find that “Cherry”
5 Tips to Save Money on a Used Car, Crossover, SUV or Truck Regardless of the Market
Tip #1. Only Buy From a National Franchised Dealer (NFD) vs an Independent Dealer
A National Franchised Dealer (NFD) would be like a Ford, Toyota ,GM, Chrysler, Honda, or Mercedes Benz dealer etc. There are a host of benefits to only buy from a National Franchised Dealer such as:
- A NFD has Access to higher quality used cars that a franchised dealer gets on a new car trade-ins.
- Only NFD are allowed and can leverage the privilege of buying from factory sponsored auctions.
- Independents usually end-up with left over ’seconds” from auctions that quality NFD dealers pass on.
- NFD have 10 times the service facility that an independent has that guarantees some sort of pre-inspection service before and after the sale.
- Quality NFD put all their used vehicles through a rigorous certification examination and approval process before they are offered to the public for sale.
- NFD have more finance sources than independents.
- NFD’s will 8 out of 10 times provide more favorable purchasing terms than an independent.
- NFD’s have more resources to offer choices of extended used car warranties than independents.
- NFD’s will 9 out of 10 times give you more money for your trade-in.
- The life expectancy of a NDF is 30 times longer than that of an independent.

CARS $4,500 Cash Allowance Rebate Systems [C.A.R.S.] Starts Friday July 24 @ Doenges Ford Lincoln Mercury Toyota in Bartlesville
July 17, 2009 by Brad - Your Car Guy · 4 Comments
“We may never see this Obama Government $4,500 Cash Give Away again”.
The Cash Giveaway is in the form of Government issued Cash Vouchers. There are two Vouchers, One is good for $3,500 and the other is good $4,500. You can only buy a New Car, Truck, Van or SUV that is more fuel efficient than your trade in.
More Interesting Details About C.A.R.S?
* Cars is the Car Allowance Rebate System that allows U.S. car buyers to trade in their old “clunker” for a more fuel efficient vehicle.
* The rebate system will make it so that customers will receive $3500 vouchers or $4500 vouchers towards the purchase of a new fuel efficient vehicle.
* The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has $1 billion dollars to award to those who qualify.
* The money is expected to cover up to 250,000 (estimated) trade-ins. Once the money runs out there will be no more CARS deals. Many are speculating that the funds will be depleted by the middle of August.
* EZ-EZ-EZ. Our Goal is to make this CARS buying process here at Doenges,
How To Get The Money.
Come to Doenges Ford, Lincoln Mercury Toyota on Hiway 75 in Bartlesville- 918-333-0900
1. Select any New Car, Truck, Van, Crossover or SUV
2. The new vehicle must get at least 15 miles to the gallon. (See Chart Below)
3. The “Clunker” or Trade in must be in drivable condition.
4. The New Vehicle being purchased must have a MSRP of $45,000 or less.
5. The trade-in must get less than 18 miles per gallon
6. The trade-in applies to all vehicles manufactured from 1984 forward or the last 25 years.
7. We will do all the paper work for you to make sure you qualify.
One More Very IMPORTANT Hurdle to Clear in Order to Qualify for the $4,500 or the $3,500 Voucher
* Insurance: Required is continuous coverage for the last 12 months on the clunker
* Registration : Must also prove it was registered for the last 12 months as well
* The Word Continuous: Although there is still a week left before this starts we are hoping for a clarification on the word “Continuous”. It does not seem fair that if you have owned a car for 10 years and maybe there was a gap for a month or two you are locked out of the offer.
* Red Tape: Like all government programs there is a lot of red tape. Here at Doenges we are trained how to get through all the red tape and make this a simple process, Call Smokey at 918-333-0900 for all the information.

The Ford F-150 Platinum Truck Drop from Bartlesville’s Frank Lloyd Wright Price Tower
July 3, 2009 by Brad - Your Car Guy · 3 Comments
The phone’s been ringing off the hook. If you live in Northern Oklahoma, chances are you know why. A few days ago we announced that we would be dropping our F-150 off of Bartlesville’s Price Tower to demonstrate how tough Ford Trucks are. Seems the folks around these parts agree…they’re worried about about what one of our trucks would do to the Frank Lloyd Wright tower, and as a Price Tower Board Member, I don’t blame them. I thought I would take a few minutes and explain how this promotion will work, and why I believe it’s “safe”.
Here’s our components:
The Product: A 2009 Ford F150 Platinum Edition with a standard equipment package that would impress Frank Lloyd Wright. The all new F-150 has too many standard features to list here. This is a Ford workhorse pick-up with a plethora of luxurious appointments.
The Blueprint Location: Price Tower in Bartlesville Oklahoma. Visible from no less than 10 miles on the Northeast Oklahoma open prairie.
The Price Tower is a nineteen story, 221 foot high tower in Bartlesville, that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It is the only realized skyscraper by Wright, and is one of only two vertically-oriented Wright structures extant (the other is the S.C. Johnson Wax Research Tower in Racine, Wisconsin).
Bartlesville’s Price Tower a National Landmark
The Price Tower was commissioned by Harold C. Price of the H. C. Price Company, a local oil pipeline and chemical firm. It opened to the public in February 1956. Price Tower was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1974 and was designated a National Landmark in 2007.
The Price Tower Arts Center is the art complex at Price Tower. It is a civic art museum, and with a keen focus on art, architecture and design. Features includes a museum, tours of the historic tower, and a hotel that is unique.
Flawless Execution: “How the Heck are You Going to Do That?”
This promotion was first discussed after I ran the story on my Grandfather, Bill Doenges on April 26. “Doenges Celebrates their 68th year in Bartlesville”. That story prompted a lot of local conversation. One of those conversations took place at Price Tower, which is a hop, skip and a jump from Doenges Ford, Lincoln, Mercury & Toyota.
Wait a minute….Eggs and a Ford F150…I don’t get it?
That conversation was centered on an event at Price Tower that is called the “Eggstravaganza”. This is a wonderful event hosted by the Price Tower which challenges both youth and adults to drop an egg in a container – designed by the participant – from the ninth floor of the Price Tower. While this event is always well attended, I was discussing it with Price Tower Executive Director Tim Boruff on how we might be able to make this years event even bigger. On my drive back to the dealership…”Bam!!” it hit me…it was a little off the wall…but what the heck.
I challenged Chris Oldroyd, our Advertising and Marketing guy, to come up with a promotion that would include Price Tower while positioning our brand. The idea was to compare the durability of a Ford truck to the fragile eggs which are to be dropped on July 18th at the “Eggstravaganza” event. After a few weeks, Chris brought his presentation to me. With the assistance of several structural engineers, architects, and a team of others I was left to choose Plan A, Plan B or Plan C.
Is it Door # 1, Door #2 or Door # 3?
Plan A: Was radical and that is an understatement. Chris and his team assured me that they could pull this off. Although very creative, and it would be memorable for years to come I nixed the Plan. It just had too many what if’s?
Plan B: Had all of the elements of Plan A without the risk.
Plan C: Was creative but would not be memorable.
I choose Plan B…….Soooo what is Plan B?
If I revealed the mechanics of the promotion it would ruin your curiosity, fun and excitement of this event. It reminds me of a sign I saw a in a retail Magic Tricks store. The sign read: “Once the Trick is Sold the Secret is Told” therefore No Refunds. I will let your imagination fill in any gaps. Better yet just show up. This event will start at 6:30PM sharp on Friday July 10th, rain or shine. I don’t really know what all the hub-bub is about… surely we can’t be the first people to drop a truck from a building, can we?
By the way, click here for a sneak peek at Plan B
If you can’t make it to the event I will post a recap over the July 11th -12th weekend.
P.S. My grandfather believed that giving back and being a active participant in the community was the civically responsible thing to do. It was essential for the survival of the local car dealership. The Price Tower is a cause that is close to my heart and one that I take a particular interest and active involvement in. This promotion will retain the integrity of Price Tower and give us a chance to give back to the community….and provide fun and entertainment for all.
