Buying a New or Used Vehicle “Going Once-Going Twice”

FORD Shelby GT 500 Cobra BlueVisiting your local dealer to purchase a vehicle is not an auction. It is more of a negogiation. The salesperson who says their price is only good today is either misinformed, stupid or both. If you are looking to buy a new car, then beware these “sales tricks” and don’t bother buying a car from a sales person that tries them. Remember, there are plenty of honest and upfront sales people that will be able to get you a great car without tricking you into buying it. Also, these are some tips on buying a car, that you can generally apply to any dealer you’re working with.

Car Sales Tricks To Watch For

  1. Never be fooled by the car sales person that tells you that you must buy the car that same day. This type of sales person is trying to meet a sales quota only. You do not have to buy the car that day if you are not ready. Don’t be pressured into making such a big decision on the spot. There’s always another car, even if that one should sell.
  2. There are car sales people that will take advantage of inexperienced consumers. If this is your first time buying a car, then finding someone you can trust is even more important. Ask the sales person many questions, including “Should I be asking you anything else?” Taking along a friend or family member that is knowledgeable about cars and car buying is a good idea, too. They can give you some good advice on buying a car. You need to have a lot of information and be comfortable with this decision! Buying a car involves a lot more than picking out the color you like best, so don’t be distracted by the sales person who tries to get you excited about the beautiful colors.
  3. If you do try to leave the sales floor, perhaps telling the sales person that you “need to sleep on it” and come back again before you make your decision, you may fall victim to the “low ball” sales trick. If the sales person offers you a “too good to be true” offer that you can only get “today,” then it is definitely too good to be true. Trust your instincts, this is not the person you should be dealing with to buy your new car. There will be another great deal tomorrow when you are more ready to make your new car purchase.
  4. Believe it or not, there are some times of the year that are better than others to buy a new car. The best time is often around the Christmas holidays, when everyone else is shopping for gifts and not spending their money on cars. Visit your car dealer, and chances are they will be very motivated to give you a good deal
  5. If you know exactly what you want, and have your financing arranged, you may benefit from buying a car online. Your dealings with sales people will be limited, you may have access to additional information about rebates and incentives that apply, and you will probably get exactly what you are looking for-without even having to ever leave your house to buy a car online.

In addition to these five tips there is one more tip for buying a car that will tip the advantage in your favor. Silence. Practice the art of silence. Anytime a salesperson gives you a price don’t say anything. Just stare at them and give a sigh or a look of disbelief. 9 out of 10 times the salesperson will drop their price and you did not have to say a word. Now that is money in your pock
