Shopping for a new car can be a confusing venture for the average consumer. Between makes and models, buying or leasing, new or pre-owned, and of course that long list of available options, “Does my Mustang really need a toaster?”, the car buying experience can, at times, leave your head spinning. But, when you’re making a purchase as important as a car, staying clear headed is crucial. On the lot, knowledge really is power. That’s why, when asked what steps the consumer should take before visiting the dealership, I always start with the same three; research, research, research.
Most experts will agree that good research is the number one step a consumer needs to take to ensure in making a sound car buying decision and, these days, there is no reason anyone need feel uninformed. With the entirety of the internet at the tips of your fingers, the information you need is always available. There are literally countless websites dotting the digital landscape that cater to everyone’s needs, from the first time car buyer to the classic car dealer. All you need to do is find the resource that is right for you.
To get you started on the path to arming yourself with the knowledge that will surely lead to a rewarding car buying experience, here are a few sites where the average car consumer can find safe haven;
Best Automotive Resources on the Web
ConsumerReports.org – from one of the most trusted names in consumer advice, the site offers unbiased reviews and free advice about the car buying process. It also provides thousands of reviews and ratings for most cars sold in the U.S.. In addition, Consumer Reports previews new cars that have just entered the market and puts them through a battery of tests to determine factors like eco-impact and fuel efficiency.
CarandDriver.com – is a membership driven site. Members can elect to receive newsletters, periodic notices and consumer reports focused on events in the automotive industry. The site also provides reviews, buying forms, and advice for the prospective car buyer and automotive enthusiast.
Autos.msn.com – is an informational site providing free evaluation services. Here, vehicles are divided into nine categories and are evaluated according to category specific criteria. The categories include passenger cars, hybrids, vans and minivans, sports cars, future cars, and certified pre-owned vehicles. Many interesting articles on sport racing and auto news are also featured throughout the site.
TheAutoChannel.com – offers a great deal of resource material. Prospective buyers can enter the year and make of the vehicle they are considering and receive pricing information, safety ratings, and lists of vehicle specifications.
Aside from these online resources there are numerous buyer guides, news and magazine articles targeted towards anyone who is in the market for a new or pre-owned car. There is really no reason anyone should have to wonder onto the car lot feeling as if they are unprepared. Consumer experts say that the most effective car buying is done by incorporating information from these resources and arming yourself with it at the dealership. Of course, your trusted dealer should be able to assist you in making the automotive purchase that is right for you, but it is always a good idea to use every resource available. You never hear anyone claiming they made a mistake because they were too informed about a topic. Remember, an informed buyer is a smart buyer.
